Gray hair was all the rage last year. People spent money trying to get the perfect shade of gray for their tresses but not everyone is ready to jump on that bandwagon. Gray hair can be caused by a number of factors including vitiligo, vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid problems, low bone mineral density, aging, anemia, genetics, and stress. Quite often these factors aid in premature graying; which is when gray hair sets in before the age of 40.
The root cause of gray hair is a lack of the essential nutrients, especially vitamin A and B group vitamins, along with the minerals copper, iron, and zinc. If you are genetically predisposed to gray hair then there is hardly anything that can be done about it, but if it is caused by any deficiencies or underlying health issues there is hope.

The thing is, reversing gray hair is no quick fix. You don’t just slap something on the hair and reverse the grays overnight. Sure you may rebut by pointing to henna and other dyes but that is simply covering the gray, not reversing it; for when the new growth comes in your roots will still lack pigment. Reversing gray requires a combination of internal and external applications. Simply put, your diet is just as important (if not more important) as the topical treatments you will take care to apply.
Reversing grays from the inside out
As indicated above, the science of graying comes down to the lack of certain nutrients that give the follicles what they need to make the pigment that the hair needs.
If you are able to boost the uptake of those nutrients, then you will be on your way to reversing your grays. The best way to do so is by getting some good ol’ natural super foods, herbs, cereal grasses and using supplements.

Blackstrap Molasses
This is a byproduct of sugarcane-rich in B6 vitamins, manganese, magnesium, iron, potassium, calcium copper, and zinc. Consuming a tablespoon of this provides up to 20% of the daily recommended intake of these minerals and vitamins.

Fo-ti Herb
Fo-ti herb, which actually translates from Chinese to “black-haired Mr. He” or “black haired man”, has been reported to reverse gray hair extremely fast. The root of this herb can be brewed for tea which can be taken with the molasses.

Barley
This is an excellent source of vitamin A and the B group vitamins along with copper, iron, silica and zinc and should also be used as a supplement every day.

Indians use many of the remedies below. Much of what you need may already be sitting in your kitchen.

A Mixture of onion and lemon juice
We already knew that onion juice is great for reducing shedding and lemon is great for improving sheen or shine; but who knew that both of them combined could be a gray hair zapper?
Seven years ago Bradford University in the UK found that thin graying hair is caused by a build-up of hydrogen peroxide in the hair follicles and scalp and catalase, an enzyme found in the onion effectively neutralizes it, resulting in the reversal of gray hair. Ideally, the mixture must be rubbed into the scalp daily. You can even add wheat or barley to the mixture to create a gray zapper mask since both cereals contain catalase as well.
Curry Leaves with Coconut Oil
Curry leaves make a potent hair tonic. The high levels of B-group vitamins are responsible for the potency of curry leaves when it comes to reversing grays. A handful of curry leaves should be brought to boil in water and 1- 2 tablespoons of coconut oil should be stirred in. When the leaves turn black remove the pot from the heat and allow 20 minutes for it to cool. The oil from the resulting mixture should be strained and massaged into hair nightly and rinsed off in the mornings.

Rosemary and Sage
Half a cup each of rosemary and sage boiled in water for 30 minutes produces another great home remedy for gray hair reversal. The mixture should be allowed to cool for 2–3 hours then applied to the hair and scalp and left on until it dries. The hair should then be cleansed with a natural shampoo. This routine should be done weekly.

Gooseberry and Coconut Oil
Dried gooseberries – more popularly known as amla – and coconut oil each has properties which aid in gray hair reversal. They can be mixed and massaged into scalp daily.

Amaranth
Squeeze the juice from the leaves of this vegetable and use it to massage the scalp. Let it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing it off. Consistent use should yield favorable results.
