Halloween Costumes For Natural Hair

Halloween on 31 october and as always, it presents a good excuse for adults to dress up and make a fool out of themselves without seeming weird. Sure, we all give a collective sigh and side-eye to the cliched “sexy nurse” costumes, but finding something interesting to be can be harder than you think. Here’s a slideshow of costume ideas that protect your modesty while showcasing your natural hair.

When Pam Grier played Foxy Brown in the 70's film it made afros undeniably sexy. So forget all the sexy nurse, sexy pilot and sexy referee costumes. Bring natural beauty back to Halloween.

Feeling royal? Be pretty and historic by going as Disney's first black princess, Tiana. Just arrange your hair in an up-do with a few soft pieces hanging down. Carrying a small (fake) frog with you will really add charm and make this look complete.

The Bride of Frankenstein is a great costume idea for natural haired beauties. This look is super easy to pull off. Just wear a white dress and add white streaks to the hair at your temple. Draw on your "stitches" with eyeliner.

Party like a rockstar by actually dressing up as one of the biggest rock legends ever - Jimi Hendricks! Not only does this costume allow your hair to shine in all its natural glory, it will keep your butt warm if you live in an area where temperatures have dropped! That a win/win situation! Hair too long to be Jimi? Try dressing up as Slash.

Okay, this has less to do with natural hair and more to do with my love of The Color Purple. It's one of my favorite movies. Dressing up as Shug Avery not only makes you the ultimate flapper, it gives you a great excuse to go around all night saying, "You showl is ugly!!"

We all remember Medusa from Greek mythology. One look in her eyes was all it took for a man to be literally frozen in his tracks forever. Create your own killer look by using your locs, braids or twist as the "snakes." Find a few small plastic snakes in the toy section of your local dollar store. Cut the heads off and attach them to the ends of your hair to complete this cool look.
